Poker is a card game whereby players bet on the strength of their hands (card combinations) against other people on the table. Players can represent a strong Hand Ranking in Poker even if they don’t actually hold strong cards; this is referred to as bluffing. The winner of a round in Poker is the player with the highest Hand Ranking or alternatively, the only player remaining in the round after all other players have folded (laid down their cards).

Betting and Play

In terms of Texas Hold’Em Poker (the most popular form of Online Poker) players can win by making the best five card hand, from two hole cards (personal to that player) and up to five community cards (available to everyone in the pot). Each player is dealt their hole cards and play moves clockwise around the Poker table, starting from a dealer button (represented by a disc). Players to the left of the dealer button post a Small Blind and Big Blind respectively to start the action before the cards are dealt. The blinds are posted before any cards are dealt.

Call, Raise or Fold

Once the cards have been dealt, each Online Poker player has the option to Call the Big Blind (put chips into the pot to match the Big Blind), Raise (put chips into the pot worth at least double the Big Blind) or Fold (pass their cards to the dealer and leave the hand).

The Flop

In Texas Hold’Em Poker, the first three community cards are dealt face up in the middle of the table. Players then combine their two starting cards with the community cards to create the best possible hand. Each player clockwise will get the option to Check (pass the action to the next player if there has been no previous bet), make a Bet (put chips into the pot) or fold their cards.

The Turn

Once betting is complete after the Flop, the dealer will place a fourth card in the community area which is referred to as the Turn card. Now there are 6 cards available to make the best 5 card hand. Players may stay in the hand regardless of the Hand Ranking they hold, as they may wish to Bluff or hit a draw such as a Flush or Straight. More experienced players will learn the mathematical Poker Odds of particular cards that need to be drawn.

The River

A final card known as the River is dealt and the last round of betting takes place. If more than one player remains in the hand after the last round of betting there is a showdown, during which all players turn their cards face up and the player holding the best Hand Ranking wins the pot. If only one player remains as all others have folded, they win the pot by default and have the option to reveal/not reveal their cards to the other Online Poker players.
